.There are four methods of disposing the waste plastic. They are 1. landfilling, 2 incineration 3. recycling, and 4. biodegradation.
I do not know whether and what other methods have been tested/tried. While thinking on the subject i clicked two more options. I don't know how feasible they are, but are worth trying.
There are thousands of mines worldwide from where different ores are extracted. The amount of total yearly extraction may cross millions of tons in which percentage of coal mines is much higher. After extracting the mines for many years, the usable cheaper output declines to great extent and then the mines are closed. The mines are closed which are like caves, much deeper caves. And these caves are never opened again. I suggest that it must be tried that whether these mines could be dumped with compacted plastic waste of all types. I think there are many benefits of this method.
The waste dumped like this will automatically get decomposed. It is possible that in future we can get different type of material from these caves. But that may not be of much benefit. These caves can be dumped with millions of tons of plastic waste. The present quantity of millions of tons of waste plastic everywhere in the world will get dumped within a year in these caves and still there will be ample space left. Which will accommodate future generation of plastic waste. The main ingredients of plastic materials are Carbon, Oxygen and Hydrogen. Then these contain some small percent of chlorine, sulphur and nitrogen. The main ingredients may give carbon dioxide, water to some extent due to natural processes in the cluster of Earth. The quantum of other materials is so small that it will not create any hazard to nature. The carbon dioxide will also not pose much hazard in short term or it will also get decomposed. It is possible that there may be generation of some quantity of carbon monoxide.
The miners may be compensated for using the space and efforts of dumping the waste inside the caves. After filling the caves with great amount of plastic waste, they can be closed and capped again. Governments will need to transport the waste materials at the entrance of the mines. But this exercise will be of tremendous benefit of saving the nature, using the natures resources without damaging the Mother Nature and is much cheaper option .
The other option being suggested by me here is or may be little costly and dangerous. It may not be more viable but is worth experimenting. This option is of using Volcanoes for dumping the waste plastic. There are many volcanoes which erupt after remaining dormant for many years. It must be seen whether these volcano cavities can be used to dump the plastic waste or whether the dumping should be started when the initial smoke starts coming out. Here also the waste will get decomposed very fast and the residual part remaining in volcano will be very small like a pebble for a ton of dumped plastic. The heat of volcanoes is tremendous and nothing will remain in its original form there. The hazardous smoke of plastic waste will be very meagre compared to smoke erupted by the volcano. Only difficulty is, whether it will be possible to dump plastic in cavity of volcano and how it should be achieved. The transportation of the waste will also be a great problem. Mines are there in many countries ( for various kinds of materials and metals ). But volcanoes are not there is every country. The countries where volcano is situated and who allow to dump the waste may be monetarily compensated for use of its resources.
I request the scientists and economists and nature lovers think and experiment on these options.
